Training Workshop on Breastfeeding Promotion
Lahore, January 2009

2009: Fatima Memorial Hospital (FMH), one of the leading healthcare resources in Pakistan organized a training workshop on Promotion of Breast Feeding in the Community. The objective was to promote breast feeding and reduce child morbidity by making available breast feeding expertise at the community level. The workshop was organized by the Nur Foundation Centre for Health and Social Policy at the Fatima Memorial System, Lahore in collaboration with TheNetwork for Consumer Protection, Islamabad. The workshop was held at the Auditorium of the Saida Waheed FMH College of Nursing. Speaking at this occasion Mrs Janet MacGregor, Principal of Saida Waheed FMH College of Nursing, said that Breastfeeding has been important since the beginning of mankind. She said that the psychological bonding which develops between the child and the mother during Breastfeeding is unparalleled and does not have any alternative. Ms Rubina Bhatti from TheNetwork said that to support the effective implementation of Breastfeeding ordinance, TheNetwork has taken on the initiative to link up with institutions and organization like the Fatima Memorial System working at the grass roots level, to establish community-based Breastfeeding support groups. State of the art lecture on “Ten Steps of Successful Breast Feeding” was delivered by Ms. Marieke Driess. Eminent personalities from the nursing & health sector spoke at the occasion which included Mrs Nighat Durrani, Registrar Pakistan Nursing Council , Mrs Shehla Naeem Zafar, Principal Institute of Nursing Dow University Health Sciences, Karachi, Mrs Janet MacGregor, Principal Saida Waheed FMH College of Nursing, Mrs Irshad Javed, Director Nursing, Development and Education FMH, Mrs Nisab Akhtar, Director of Nursing Saida Waheed FMH College of Nursing, Ms Nargis Butt, DGN Punjab and Prof Aman Ullah Khan, Head of Community Medicine Department FMH College of Medicine & Dentistry. The one day activity was divided into two sessions. In the morning session presentations and discussions were held on importance of breast feeding and the breast feeding ordinance to create awareness among the participants.In the afternoon session, the participants from the community were given practical training by the foreign experts on how to help mothers breast feed. The participants of the seminar/workshop were the midwives and nurses from FMH, invited midwives and nurses from other institutions of Lahore, selected LHVs, Dais and women who have the status of advisors in their community, from the Community Outreach areas of FMS and some other NGOs.
