Q1: What is Allied Health?

Allied Health forms the spokes of the dynamic wheel of health care, one of the nation's fastest growing industries. The term "Allied Health" was coined to group together diversified professionals who perform essential work in health care and, at the same time, to distinguish them from those in medicine, nursing and dentistry. Allied Health consists of a variety of professions, including Physiotherapy, Medical Imaging Technology, Lab Technology, Speech and Language Pathology, Audiology, Optometry, Dental Hygiene & Dental Technology etc.
Allied health sciences are no longer subsidiaries of main stream medicine, but are considered as an important adjunct in the health care industry.

Q2: Why did FMH launch an Institute of Allied Health Sciences?

With the concept of holistic well-being gaining momentum, the need to train allied health professionals of outstanding quality was felt and the Institute of Allied Health Sciences was established in 2005 as a constituent of FMH College of Medicine & Dentistry. FMH Institute of Allied Health Sciences is the pioneer allied health sciences institute in Punjab, and is now offering:

Q5:     How is Life @ FMH Institute of Health Sciences?

Sharing a modern building with the FMH College of Medicine & Dentistry, the campus is situated in Shadman, an attractive area in the heart of Lahore. The IAHS is located in a four storied building, within the FMH premises and thus enjoys all the facilities available in and around the Fatima Memorial Hospital.

As an Institution, we offer a variety of facilities and services on campus to foster motivation and commitment among faculty and staff. The campus facility in Shadman, Lahore consists of medical labs, computer labs, library, lecture rooms, providing a modern and comfortable learning environment for students. Facilities and equipment are evaluated  and up-dated regularly to ensure they provide the latest classroom and hands-on experience needed.

Our many collaborative activities across programs in the college, with programs across the campus, and with other educational institutions also serve to enhance the education of our students. Q6: How is the Faculty @ FMH IAHS?

Our College is widely known for its excellent teaching and student learning environment, superb innovative research programs, community engagement, and service to the various health care professions. Our primary concern is to provide the best educational experience for our students. To accomplish this, our faculty and staff have led the way by introducing new technologies into the classroom, integrating research into the undergraduate and graduate curricula, and providing the best fieldwork experiences. Our graduates perform far above the other medical colleges in the university examinations in the various accredited disciplines and are extremely competitive in the global market.

Q7:     Is FMH Institute of allied Health Science accredited?

We offer programs at the bachelor's levels which are fully accredited.  The University of Health Science has granted affiliation to FMH College of Medicine and Dentistry for the Allied Health Science courses namely B.Sc. (Hons.) Physiotherapy; B.Sc. (Hons.) Medical Imaging Technology; B.Sc. (Hons.) Medical Lab Technology; B.Sc. Speech & Language Pathology; B.Sc. Audiology; B.Sc. Optometry; B.Sc. Dental Hygiene; and B.Sc. Dental Technology.


Q8: How can I tell if I am a good candidate for FMH IAHS?

You are a good candidate if you fulfill the following criteria:

•    F.Sc. Pre-medical (with 50% marks in science subjects) or Equivalent Qualification.
•    Students having qualification of F.Sc. Pre-engineering (with 60% marks in science subjects) are eligible only for admission in B.Sc. (Hons) Medical Imaging Technology.
•    Age between 17 to 25 years.

Q10 :  What are the features of different courses that are being offered @ FMH Institute of Health Sciences?

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy is a dynamic healthcare profession which primarily focuses on the patients that have musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary, and integumentary systems’ impairments leading to functional disabilities. Additionally the field of physiotherapy is well developed in specializations such as sports physiotherapy, women’s health etc. Employment opportunities for physiotherapists are tremendous as it is a career where the demand exceeds supply.

Medical Imaging Technology (MIT)

A Medical Imaging Technologist is the only expert recognized for the production of medical diagnostic images by using ionizing or non-ionizing radiations. Radiological Technologists organize many of the procedures, which are undertaken in Radiology/Medical Imaging Departments. They execute radiographic procedures, such as CT Scans, MRIs, Angiography, General Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Mammography.

Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT)

MLT is a profession that combines the challenges and rewards of medicine with laboratory science. Medical Laboratory Technologists perform complex and varied laboratory analyses, and use critical thinking skills in determining the accuracy and validity of test results. In diverse health care settings, clinical laboratory scientists provide test results used by physicians in determining: the presence, extent, and causes of disease; monitoring therapy; and evaluating testing protocols to insure optimum and safe public health applications.

Speech & Language Pathology

Working with the full range of human communication and its disorders, speech-language pathologists evaluate and diagnose speech, language, cognitive-communication and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Speech-language pathologists often work as part of a team, which may include teachers, physicians, audiologists, psychologists, social workers, rehabilitation counselors and others. Corporate speech-language pathologists also work with employees to improve communication with their customers.

Audiology

Hearing is one of our most vital senses, and audiologists are experts in the management of the auditory and balance systems. They specialize in the study of normal and impaired hearing, prevention of hearing loss, identification and assessment of hearing and balance problems & rehabilitation of persons with hearing and balance disorders. They work in offices of physicians; in hospitals; and in outpatient care centers. Some work in educational services, scientific research and development services.

Optometry

Optometrist is a health care provider who specializes in the examination, diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of diseases and disorders of the human visual system, the eye, and the associated structures. They care for patients before and after surgeries such as laser vision correction and cataract removal. Optometrists often specialize in work with sports vision, contact lenses, or vision therapy. The majority of optometrists work in a general practice. Others consult, teach, or conduct research.

Dental Hygiene

Dental hygienists are uniquely qualified and specially trained to work with the dentist, focusing on periodontal health by monitoring oral hygiene practices and assisting the patient to develop a home care plan to maintain their oral health. Hygienists are specially trained to carry out scaling and polishing. Dental hygienists are in demand in general dental practices, as well as in specialty practices such as pediatric dentistry.

Dental Technology

A Dental Technologist is a regulated health care profession. Dental Technicians are healthcare professionals whose scope of work includes the design, construction, repair or alteration of dental appliances or devices. The dental technologists autonomously perform the full scope of dental technology practice and supervise the technical aspects of dental laboratory operation..


Q11:     What will FMH IAHS students do after they graduate?

After graduating from FMH IAHS, there is an immense pool of job opportunities available locally as well as worldwide. On the international horizons, well paid jobs are available in Middle East and in developed countries of Europe. There are numerous opportunities for a graduate of B.Sc., M.Phil, PhD and specializations courses are available worldwide. Graduates are also eligible to apply for the foreign and local scholarships for higher studies as offered by HEC.
